Assistant professor in Integrated semiconductor device and chip technologies

KTH Royal Institute of Technology, School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Subject field

Integrated semiconductor devices and chip technologies.

Subject description

The subject area covers material and process technology for the manufacturing of integrated devices, circuits, and systems - both at the chip level and in packaged solutions - from a broad perspective. This includes, for example. co-integration of electrical and photonic functionality in communication, memory, and power applications.  The research is experimental in nature and aims to improve the functionality and performance of semiconductor devices as well as related system applications. Therefore, both fundamental and applied scientific questions are addressed.

The Division of Electronics and Embedded Systems conducts research in areas such as heterogeneous III‑V/CMOS integration within the competence center Advanced Chip Technologies (ACT), and SiC-based power electronics within the EU Wide Bandgap Pilot Line. The appointed assistant professor is expected to contribute to at least one of these research areas.

Duties

The assistant professor will teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels and carry out independent research. Administrative duties are also included.

The assistant professor will be expected to contribute actively to the operations and development of the cleanroom infrastructure at KTH’s Electrum Laboratory. This includes method development, deployment, and optimization of process flows and strategies for the development of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits, in close cooperation with academic and industrial actors and the laboratory operational staff. It is also expected that the selected candidate is well acquainted with related materials and device analysis.

The assistant professor will be given opportunity to develop their independence as researcher and gain accreditation that may allow them to take other teaching positions with higher eligibility requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance). Following application, the assistant professor can apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Eligibility

An individual who has completed a doctorate or equivalent scientific competence is qualified for appointment as an assistant professor. Candidates who met those qualifications a maximum of seven years before the deadline for applying for the appointment as an assistant professor have expired should be prioritized. Other candidates may also be considered if there are special reasons.  Special reasons refer to absence due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointments as an assistant professor at KTH are stated in KTH's appointments procedure section 1.3 and apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has

  • scientific expertise demonstrated through scientific publications, conference attendance, participation in research cooperation and other undertakings in the scientific community such as assignments as a reviewer or expert.
  • potential to qualify for a higher teaching post. This includes the potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the subject field in question and the ability to establish, review, and develop the research area in question.
  • interest in and capability to develop advanced process technologies in the Electrum Laboratory infrastructure and the national MyFab network. Experience in research and development within cleanroom facilities in academia, research institutes, or industry is considered a significant merit.

Of second-highest importance is that the applicant has

  • experience from a postdoctoral visit in a research environment other than the university at which the applicant defended their doctoral thesis. In application-oriented areas, experience from research and development work within the industry or other organisations can, depending on focus and scope, be considered to correspond to a traditional postdoc visit to another university
  • an interest in and understanding of pedagogical development within the subject field in question and capability to conduct and plan teaching within the subject field in Swedish or English.
  • capability to cooperate with industrial research and development organizations.
  • interest in and insights concerning leadership in academia, collaboration with the outside community, and awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with a particular focus on gender equality.

It is also important that the applicant has

  • administrative expertise.
  • pedagogical training in higher education, or other pedagogical training and/or experience.

Special grounds of assessment for promotion to associate professor

When assessing applications for promotion to associate professor, provisions according to Section 1.2.4 of Appointments procedure at KTH will be applied. Ability to teach in Swedish is a merit that is given great importance in the application for promotion.
