Our third-cycle courses are open for anyone who fullfill the requirements, both doctoral students from KTH and from other universities, however students enrolled in our own PhD programme are priorotized. Some of our courses are given in parallell with courses on advanced level and follow the periods of the academic year, while the obligatory courses are given according to an internal timeline. Obligatory Courses in the PhD programme History of Science, Technology and Environment

FAK3144 The Research Process, Introductory course 7.5 credits This course provides a comprehensive and reflexive introduction to graduate education and academic life. Seminars and lectures include topics such as practical and formal aspects of financing and examination, experiences of former PhD students and supervisors, literature search and publishing, academic writing and referencing, the humanities and the research system as well as ethics. All students will develop a thesis memo during the course and have the opportunity to give and receive feedback on these.

FAK3145 Research Communication 7.5 credits In this course we discuss the majority of research communication modes, their reasons and their consequences, internally and externally. They include conference participation, paper proposals, reviews, conference presentations, popular communication and interaction, popular presentations and texts. We continuously discuss issues of style and genre, and how to adapt and adjust to different audiences and genres.

FAK3101 Perspectives on Science, Technology and Landscape in Time and Space 15.0 credits The aim of this course is to provide students with an overview and broad knowledge about the fields of history of science, technology, and environment. The course is built up of reading monographs that have been influential and made a strong impact on subsequent research.

FAK3123 Environmental Humanities 7.5 credits The course aims to familiarize students with the more recent methodological and theoretical tools of the environmental humanities. Envisioning the field as a post (or anti)-disciplinary arena, the course will encourage students to think across disciplinary borders in order to tackle the environmental and social challenges of current times.

FAK3124 Political Ecology 7.5 credits The course explores the interdisciplinary field of Political Ecology. Political Ecology is a theoretical and methodological approach to the study of socio-ecological systems that focuses on conflict, power relationships and the unequal distribution of environmental costs and benefits. This course is given in parallell with the advanced cours AK2210, Political Ecology, in period 1.

FAK3102 Energy and Geopolitics 7.5 credits This course aims to give a deeper understanding of energy provision from a geopolitical and historical perspective. Some of the themes discussed during the course will include international dependencies: gas, oil, uranium, transnational vulnerabilities, energy and national identity in a global perspective, energy and geopolitics during the cold war, international energy crises – old and new, Russia’s role, the cybernetisation of energy systems and energy and international terrorism. This course is given in parallell with the advanced cours AK2201, Energy and Geopolitics, in period 1.
