Courses within the programme

There programme consists of mandatory courses, conditionally elective courses and elective courses.

Mandatory courses

There are two mandatory courses for all students in the programme (these courses are usually taken during year 2 of the programme):

AK2030 Theory and methodology of science (Natural and Technological Sciences)

SH2007 Research methodology in physics

Each ot the five tracks in the program, has two mandatory courses. All student have to take the two courses that are mandatory within their chosen track.

Conditionally elective courses

The mandatory and conditionally elective courses for each track are listed under “Study programme”. At least 25 credits of the conditionally elective courses must be taken (feel free to take more).

Elective courses

Elective courses (40-45 credits) can be suitable courses from other tracks or from other educational programs at KTH or elsewhere. You have quite a lot of freedom when choosing elective courses, but remember that there should be a logical connection between the courses, and that they should prepare you for the final 30-credit degree project. It is a good idea to check with your programme director or track guide (see “Programme organization”) if your choice of elective courses is suitable.

You are allowed to take 15 credits of elective courses in fields not related to the programme. This could be language courses, economy etc. (No “hobby courses” like cooking etc!)

Because of KTH rules you are not allowed to take more courses than “necessary to get your degree”. For details about this you may contact the programme director.

Under “Programme organization” there is a list of so called “Track guides”. These guides are experts concerning courses, suitable course combinations and degree projects within the different tracks. But you must also discuss your choice of 30-credit degree project with the programme director (see "Degree project").

Up to one year of the studies can be carried out abroad.

Feel free to contact your programme director or track guide if there is something you want to discuss.
