AI in coding awarded for impact
For a long time, coding was tediously manual, but in 2009, Martin Monperrus, Professor of Software Engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and his team realised that built-in AI could help make suggestions. That tool has changed the lives of millions of user software developers.
”You could say that instead of driving a car at 50 kilometres per hour, you can go at 200 kilometres per hour. It changes both productivity and creativity," says Martin Monperrus.
Using AI in coding has transformed a lot of the software we use. You can now find software where AI assists in coding in banking apps, emails and most smartphone apps.
The research behind it has now received the prestigious ACM SIGSOFT Impact Paper Award for "Learning from Examples to Improve Code Completion Systems" .
"The fact that the impact of our research has received the award feels particularly good. Getting companies to hear about research and then use it takes time. It shows that as a researcher, you have to be patient and that it can take time to reap the benefits of your work. It is also important for students to realise that it takes much patience as a researcher," says Martin Monperus.
