Professor Johan Håstad, of KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, has been awarded the Royal Society Milner Award and Lecture 2026 for his sustained and transformational contributions to theoretical computer science.

Professor Johan Håstad is a pioneer in areas such as circuit complexity, cryptography, parallel computing and optimisation, His work has shaped the very foundations of modern computing. Håstad´s research has not only advanced fundamental theory but also influenced how we think about efficiency, security and the limits of computation.

Educated at Stockholm University, Uppsala University and MIT, he became a professor at KTH in the early 1990s and has since been recognised with some of the highest honours in his field, including the Gödel Prize and the Knuth Prize.

The Royal Society Milner Award and Lecture, supported by Microsoft Research in order to help sustain a thriving research community in Europe, is the premier European award for outstanding achievement in computer science. The award is named in honour of Professor Robin Milner FRS (1934-2010), a pioneer in computer science.
