Recruitment of academic staff is a central aspect of university life, a vital instrument for university management and a pertinent issue in research on higher education. This study focuses on recruitment practices at Swedish universities, particularly the divergence between what seems to be a practice of hiring internal candidates and a policy aiming at increasing mobility.

Internal versus external recruitment

The topic of this article has been the recruitment of academic staff with a particular focus on internal versus external recruitment. In their consideration of recruitment practices, the heads of departments interviewed for this study brought up aspects that relate to six institutional logics: state, academic, managerial, market, community and family. When recruiting, these heads of departments consider the different ideals and systems to uphold these ideals.
