Degree project at Spotify receives award

Published Apr 21, 2010

Erik Bernhardsson is to receive a prize from the Swedish Association of Scientists for best degree project which was carried out at KTH in cooperation with the company Spotify. He developed a service whereby Spotify’s users based on their listening habits could automatically receive tips on music it was thought they would be interested in.

Erik Bernhardsson, who is today employed at Spotify, will receive the prize of SEK 25 000 for his efforts. He is both happy and surprised about the award.

“The practical significance of my degree project is easily understood, but it includes problems which are more difficult to solve. I build mathematical models based on which artists people listen to. Today I am responsible for all of the data and analyses, including information sent to the recording companies and statistics on the habits of listeners,” says Erik Bernhardsson in an article on the Swedish Association of Scientists’ website.
