File sharing Internet technology developed by KTH

Published May 19, 2009

Improved technology for file sharing of films on Internet is under development at KTH in cooperation with the BBC among other stakeholders. This project is financed by the EU and is based on BitTorrent technology.

“The basic concept is the same as Pirate Bay uses - peer to peer (P2P),” says Daniel Johansson, doctoral student at KTH, to Swedish Radio, P3 News.

KTH and several other universities are participating together with the BBC, Pioneer, the European Broadcasting Union and several film companies in a project to develop streaming on Internet in order to achieve improved quality.

Daniel Johansson is aware that material that is file shared illegally today, for example films, football matches and music, will also be shared using the technology developed in this EU project.

“The fact that pirates exist should not stop technological development. We cannot focus on this issue, for us this concerns creating new technology,” he states.
