KTH researchers most successful in Europe

Published May 29, 2009

KTH is the institution in Europe that has obtained most Advanced Grants from the prestigious European Research Council (ERC). Only the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel has won as many grants as KTH.

These research grants amount to between EUR 2.5 and 3.5 million over a period of five years and go to individual, established , leading edge researchers. To date KTH has received five grants that have been awarded to Mikael Östling, ICT, Axel Brandenburg, Nordita/KTH, Johan Håstad, Theoretical Computer Science, Börje Johansson, Applied Material Physics and Björn Ottersten, Signal Processing.

KTH has also received two grants within the category entitled Starting Independent Researcher Grants aimed at eminent young researchers.

ERC was formed in 2007 with the aim of supporting the best researchers in Europe. Its long-term goal is to improve scientific excellence in Europe and raise its profile at global level. One difference in comparison to other EU grants is that these are aimed at individual researchers and are not intended for network building.
