Web-based tool wins STING prize

Published Feb 16, 2009

Researchers Juliette Soulard and Stephan Meier have been awarded SEK 50 000 via the entrepreneur programme Startup, which is arranged by STING in cooperation with KTH Innovation and Innovationsbron Mitt. They are behind the tool called the Emetor which has emerged from their leading edge research into electric motors currently underway at KTH.

“This is incredible! Startup gave me the ability to see the commercial side of our work which is extremely strange to researchers. A technical solution is simple and can often only be done in only one way, but the commercial perspective provides so many ways forward!” says Stephan Meier, doctoral student at KTH

Emetor is a web-based tool for learning that is used in the development of new, more effective and energy efficient electric motors. Motors that can be used in everything from hybrid cars and wind turbines to screwdrivers. This tool has been developed by Stephan Meier and Juliette Soulard, doctoral student and lecturer at KTH, in cooperation with a number of industrial companies at the Centre of Excellence in Electric Power Engineering. Results are currently under evaluation by Husqvarna, ITT Flygt and others.

The entrepreneurship programme Startup is one of four support programmes offered by STING in cooperation with KTH and Innovationsbron Mitt. Startup is a practical training programme for researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs who have ideas for potential export companies. Within the framework of the programme participants establish a business plan which forms the basis of the decision to invest.

In this Startup session 13 projects participated spanning over fields such as solar refrigerators and control systems for hygienic medical care clothing. In addition to Best Startup Project, which was awarded SEK 50 000 contributed by Innovationsbron Mitt, all participants were awarded free participation in the development organisation Connect’s springboard training course.
