Study Mechatronics at KTH

One major challenge facing engineers today is the vast amount of information exchange and communication required in product development projects. Mechatronics engineers need not only a strong multidisciplinary knowledge and technical skills, but also a broad understanding of how to interact successfully with design teams across other disciplines. KTH Campus in Stockholm offers a two-year Master of Science programme in Mechatronics (120 ECTS credits, taught in English), which equips students to handle these challenges.

Why Mechatronics?

The integration of electronics and software in mechanical products is becoming increasingly important and complex. Mechatronics engineers, with their technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, control and software engineering, play a crucial role in enhancing the functionality and performance of traditional mechanical systems, and use their broad understanding to interact with design teams across other disciplines.

What is Mechatronics?

Mechatronics is a field of engineering that combines mechanical, electrical and computer systems to create intelligent and user-friendly products and services. Mechatronics engineers have key competencies in motion control, robot design, embedded systems, real-time programming and distributed systems, making them well-suited to develop innovative and intelligent products in a wide range of industries, for example medical technology, industrial manufacturing and automation, forestry, and autonomous vehicles and the supporting infrastructure, to name but a few.

Our Mechatronics programme focuses on problem-based learning and project work, providing students with a cross-disciplinary, holistic view of product development. Courses are heavily focused on teamwork, project organization, and management, preparing students for large, complex projects in the field. Students also have the opportunity to specialize in specific areas such as control engineering, AI/ML, robotics, and medical technology.

If you choose to study Mechatronics with us, as well as learning the core technical competencies, you will be trained in cooperation, communication and project management to develop the skills necessary to become an engineer with the competence to develop innovative and intelligent products in different fields.
