Karin Edvardsson Björnberg

Professor in Environmental Philosophy

Karin Edvardsson Björnberg's research focuses on value-, knowledge-, and goal-oriented questions within climate and environmental policy. Climate and environmental policy are complex areas that require access to knowledge from a wide range of academic disciplines, including natural and social sciences, technology, and humanities. Climate and environmental issues often transcend national borders, involve long time horizons and significant uncertainty, tend to have irreversible outcomes, and in many cases, can only be resolved if actors at various levels cooperate over extended periods.

In her environmental philosophy research, Karin contributes to addressing climate and environmental challenges. She explores critical issues, such as identifying (environmental) values that require protection and understanding the reasons behind this need. Additionally, she investigates how to effectively formulate goals within climate and environmental policy to ensure they guide and coordinate efforts among diverse stakeholders. Karin also delves into determining the extent of our commitments to environmental preservation and identifies appropriate policy tools that align with values like efficiency, utility, justice, human rights, and democracy. In her research, she employs traditional philosophical methods such as conceptual analysis and argumentation analysis, that is, analysis of how environmental political arguments are constructed and their evidential strength.
