Patrik Hilber

Professor in Electrical Engineering with specialisation in Reliability of Power systems

Patrik Hilber researches methods to improve our power grids. An efficient grid must be reliable and capable of managing both existing and unforeseen problems in a cost-effective manner. His research spans from dealing with aging power components and trees short circuiting overhead lines, to ensuring that the grid can distribute energy from new wind farms and withstand various acts of sabotage.

That our society increasingly depend on electricity as the power grids improve may seem paradoxical, but this dependency is largely positive, as the grid and electricity production play a central role in transitioning to a more sustainable society. However, it is important to approach this development with caution, especially given its complexity.

Patrik and his research group are developing methods to identify where improvements are most beneficial and where it may be acceptable to prioritize less. Their work has led to investment plans of several billion in the power grids, underscoring the significance of their research.

A growing part of their work focuses on how we manage existing information and how we can access new information. Working efficiently with this information to support a robust and sustainable power grid represents one of Patrik's greatest challenges moving forward.
