Nearly 200 years of history
Since its establishment in 1827, KTH has been at the centre of many technological advances in Sweden. In the early 1950s, the country's first nuclear reactor was installed on campus, at the same time as Sweden's very first TV station began broadcasting just across the street. Over nearly two centuries, KTH has become one of the most prominent technical universities in Europe and globally.
In 1917, KTH's iconic main campus, characterised by its courtyard building, was constructed in the northern part of central Stockholm, on the edge of the Royal National City Park, a historic site at the disposal of the Swedish monarch since the 15th century. The reigning King Carl XVI Gustaf is the university's guardian, and the royal crown has been incorporated in the university seal since 1827.

Our campuses
We have three campuses in and around Stockholm, each with its unique character and close connection to public transport, accommodation, services and entertainment.
KTH Campus
The main KTH campus, located in central Stockholm, is like a small town in the middle of a big city. Its historical buildings date back to the early 20th century, and it is situated next to the Royal National City Park, offering excellent opportunities for sports and recreation.
KTH Flemingsberg
The campus in Flemingsberg sits in one of Northern Europe’s key areas for medical technology. KTH is joined by the two other universities, Karolinska Institutet and Södertörn University, creating a student community with over 10,000 students.
KTH Solna
The campus in Solna sits in an important national hub for research within various life science disciplines. The main focus of the campus is the Science for Life Laboratory, a joint effort between four of the highest ranked universities in Scandinavia.
KTH in rankings
KTH ranks among the world’s top 100 universities overall in both the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. These rankings compare KTH with universities of different profiles and subject breadth, including large comprehensive universities.
KTH’s position is even stronger within its core fields. In their latest subject rankings, both QS and Times Higher Education place KTH first in Sweden and among the five highest-ranked universities in the European Union for Engineering and Technology in QS and Engineering in Times Higher Education. Thirteen of the 18 KTH subjects included in the QS subject ranking are among the world’s top 100.
