I feel very educated and well-prepared for my future carrier
Dina finished her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering here at KTH in 2019. After I graduated high school in Gothenburg, she began studying a technical preparatory year at Chalmers, and all she could dream about was getting accepted to KTH. She truly loves traveling and has been in around 30 countries.
Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?
The Internet is built on mathematics, and Google is based on probability theory. There is math behind everything you see around you, and the demand for mathematicians will never disappear. Right now, Artificial Intelligence is one of the hottest topics, and the keystone of AI is mathematical principles and optimization. I choose this master’s programme because I want to be a part of the future. For me, math is not about crunching numbers but rather advanced and complex algorithms. Only after one year of my studies in this program I feel very educated and well-prepared for my future carrier.
What are the best aspects of your programme?
I like how applied mathematics is very extensive and can be used in many different areas. It feels like I can contribute knowledge in all different subjects.
Have you chosen a specialisation track within the programme? If Yes, which track and why?
I choose the track called ‘’Mathematics of Data Science (DAVE)’’, to learn as much about machine learning and programming as possible.
What are some of your favourite courses so far?
I would say SF2520 Applied Numerical Methods and SF2955 Computer Intensive Methods in Mathematical Statistics, they were both challenging but very educational. Both of these courses exemplified the application of advanced math.
How is student life in Stockholm?
One thing I love about living in Sweden is how convenient it is; everything is very organized. When looking at Stockholm on a map it looks like a bunch of islands separated from each other, but you will be shocked when you start noticing how every little piece is connected with bridges and underground subways. The infrastructure is just incredible. The main campus of KTH is situated in central Stockholm close to hundreds of restaurants. Being from Gothenburg, I always wanted to live in the capital. Stockholm is the Silicon Valley of Europe and offers the most amazing jobs for engineers. This is something that you will notice as an engineering student in Stockholm, there are countless of career fairs at KTH and it is easy to make business contacts.
How would you describe your time at KTH so far?
KTH has helped me to find a career path and lifelong friendships. I’ve had a lot of fun studying at KTH and met a lot of driven like-minded people who inspired me to raise my ambitions. I’ve been a part of several student association, during my first year I joined KTH Formula, we designed and built an electric car which we competed with in an international competition in the UK. It was very fun and rewarding. I have amazing memories from my time at KTH.
What do you want to do after graduating?
I have lots of fields of interests. This is one of the reasons I chose to study applied mathematics. I can go into any field I want after graduation! I like programming, math, AI, the automotive industry and the finance industry. I just finished a summer internship where I was doing mathematical modeling in Python, I really enjoyed it and hope to do something similar after graduation.
What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?
It’s a really great choice! You will get to know many good friends and have a lot of fun while studying at one of the best technical universities in Europe! You can explore Stockholm every weekend for two years and still have lots of things to do and see. I could not be happier with my choice.
