Combined Heat and Power plants in combination with borehole thermal energy storage (completed)

Many combined heat and power plants in Sweden waste large amounts of heat summer time due to low heat demand and permanent generation of electricity. This project will provide design and decision making tools for including seasonal thermal storages in the ground so that summer time waste heat can be use during the winter.

Background

Previous design calculations have been built in the simulation environment TRNSYS for modeling a possible high temperature storage in Linköping where heat is stored in a hypotehtical large scale storage in the ground. The design model is further developed in this project by adapting it to handle hypothetical cases with alternative needs at the same time as being a stand-alone tool. The project also includes the study of groundwater flow influence in high temperature storages.

Aim and objectives

The aim of the project is to develop a new methodology for the design, control and evaluation of high temperature borehole storage integrated into a district heating system
