Genevieve is 25 years old and was born and raised in Halifax, Canada. She is studying the Nuclear Energy Engineering at the KTH main campus. Her bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick sparked her interest in the field of nuclear energy. She enjoys gymnastics, yoga, cooking, and travelling in her spare time.

Ask Genevieve a question

Why did you choose this master's programme at KTH?

I chose to study Nuclear Energy Engineering after taking elective courses related to nuclear power during my bachelor’s degree. It became clear to me that nuclear power is an integral part of the solution to meet global climate change targets, and I want to contribute to this solution. While the nuclear power industry faces many challenges, as a problem solver myself, it excites me to be able to tackle these challenges. After researching nuclear energy programmes in Europe, KTH was the obvious choice. KTH's programme offers a variety of courses taught by top-tier researchers in different fields of nuclear energy and has many connections with industrial partners. KTH is a highly-ranked institution in the beautiful city of Stockholm, so it was a no-brainer for me!

What are the best aspects of your programme?

The best aspects of the Nuclear Energy Engineering programme include the diverse learning methods, the excellent lecturers, and the chance to work with students from different backgrounds. The programme involves a mixture of project work, home assignments, exercises, lab work, presentations, and written and oral examinations, which helps you to gain well-rounded knowledge on the course topics. For example, in the Nuclear Reactor Physics course, we saw difficult concepts we learned from a textbook on a real research reactor in Prague and wrote a lab report about it, which helped me understand the concepts. The lecturers genuinely care about your learning experience at KTH and are always willing to help. Additionally, you get to work with students from different study backgrounds and countries, broadening your knowledge. You never feel alone since everyone is willing to help one another and can offer different skillsets.

What are some of your favourite courses so far?

My favourite courses so far are Nuclear Reactor Technology and Small Reactors. The Nuclear Reactor Technology course involves an intensive project on a specific type of reactor. The project included a literature review of the reactor design and safety features and calculations of thermal-hydraulic parameters. I found this project very interesting and learned so much from it. We also had to present our project progress at weekly seminars, so you can learn about the reactor types that other groups are studying. My main interest in the nuclear field is small reactors because they address many problems currently faced in the nuclear industry. You get to learn first-hand from the founder of a small reactor start-up company (which I found so fascinating!) and demonstrate your knowledge through engaging home assignments and projects.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

The main difference at KTH is the work-life balance and non-hierarchical academic system. In my previous studies, I took six courses at once, with all exams taking place at the end of the semester. I love how the academic year is structured at KTH; having courses spread across four academic periods throughout the year, I didn't have more than three courses at once, creating a much better work-life balance and less stressful exam periods. Furthermore, there is no hierarchy between professors and students at KTH. This creates an even playing field and makes it easier to ask questions and approach professors. There is often open dialogue in class which you can learn a lot rather than feeling intimidated.

How is student life in Stockholm?

Student life in Stockholm is so vibrant! As an international student, the International Reception was such a great experience for me. I made life-long friendships during this time and got to participate in many engaging activities around the city with other international students. After the reception, there are still many events throughout the year for international students through THS MAIN, such as board game nights, baking nights, and pub nights. There are chapter pubs throughout the week where you can socialize with other students. There is a wide variety of student clubs and associations to join depending on your interests. There are also many nice parks in the city and hiking areas very close by. I really think there is something for everyone in Stockholm!

How would you describe your time at KTH so far?

My time at KTH so far has been nothing short of incredible. I have received a world-class education, lived in the beautiful city of Stockholm, and met many amazing people from all over the world.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?

I know how intimidating it can be to move to a new country and start a new study programme because I have been in your position once before – but coming to KTH is the best decision I have made, and it can be yours as well! Studying abroad will provide new knowledge, skills, and life experiences. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, and I hope to see you at KTH!
