Application and deadlines
Only applications from students nominated by a partner university with an existing exchange agreement will be considered. As specified in the exchange agreement between KTH and the partner university, the number of students cannot be exceeded.
To qualify, the nominated students must have completed at least two years of the educational programme at the home university, preferably more. Students in architecture must have three years of completed studies. Students nominated by their home university for exchange studies at KTH must complete an individual online application before KTH’s application deadline. Only applications completed before the deadlines will be considered.
Find application deadlines and instructions
Double degree (DD) and dual master’s (DM) students follow the same application procedure as exchange students. Please note that only students whose home university has a DD or DM agreement with KTH can apply for DD or DM studies.
Erasmus Without Papers, EWP
For partners within the Erasmus programme (KA131), KTH uses Digital Learning Agreements, also known as OLA. Our application portal, Mobility-Online, is adapted to handle signatures digitally.
Credits, grades and transcript of records
The European Credit Transfer System, ECTS, is used at KTH. One week of full-time studies (40 hours including lectures, individual studies, etc.) is equivalent to 1,5 ECTS credits. One academic year equals 60 ECTS credits and one semester equals 30 ECTS credits.
The grading scale goes from A (excellent), B (very good), C (good), D (satisfactory), E (sufficient) to F/FX (fail). A distinction is made between the grades FX and F that are used for unsuccessful examinations. FX means: “fail- some more work required to pass” and F means: “fail – considerable further work required”.
KTH Department of Architecture does not apply the ECTS grading scale (A-E) in the examination of courses and projects. Students in Architecture can only be graded “P” for pass and “F” for fail.
Before leaving KTH, students can download their transcript of records digitally via KTH's service Ladok for students. A control code on the certificate proves its authenticity, so no signature from KTH is needed.

Language recommendation and courses
KTH does not ask for any results from official language tests, however we strongly recommend that students applying for exchange studies at KTH have a proficiency of English equivalent to the European B2 level.
More on the European levels (europass.europa.eu)
The main language of instruction on bachelor's level (year 1-3) is Swedish and the main language of instruction on master's level (year 4-5) is English. Nevertheless, Swedish language courses are offered - and recommended - to get an introduction to Swedish society and culture.
If students have some knowledge in Swedish and choose to follow a course given in Swedish, it should be noted that normally a considerable proportion of the course literature is in English and the teaching staff can be expected to have a good command of English.

Residence permit for studies
Students with non-EU/EEA citizenship need to apply for a residence permit for studies before entering Sweden. Further information and application forms regarding residence permit may be obtained from the Swedish Embassy or Consulate in the home country of the student, or from Migrationsverket/the Swedish Migration Board:
Residence permit for studies in Sweden (migrationsverket.se)
In order to apply for a residence permit for studies, students must:
- hold a valid passport
- be accepted on a course of full-time study at a university or university college
- be able to support yourself during the period for which you are applying for
- have a comprehensive insurance policy if admitted for less than a year
- have a Letter of Acceptance from KTH.
Nordic citizens do not require a visa or residence permit. EU citizens have the right to study in Sweden without a residence permit. Foreign students are allowed to work in Sweden during their period of study. No additional work permit is needed. However, please be aware that it is difficult to find a part-time job in Stockholm. KTH does not help students to find work.

Insurance
KTH recommend that all international students have complete insurance coverage to avoid high costs in case of an unexpected incident or illness. It is important that all students check their insurance coverage before coming to KTH so that they are fully covered.
Incoming exchange, double degree and dual master's students are covered by a personal injury insurance when they are on university premises, and on journeys to and from the university.
Personal injury insurance (KTH Student Web)
In addition, the students are covered with an insurance called Student IN.
Terms and Conditions Student IN (kammarkollegiet.se)
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
Students from EU/EEA member countries should bring the European Health Insurance Card, filled out by the social insurance office in their home country. With this card you are entitled to the same standard patient fees as Swedish citizens for emergency health care and certain types of non-emergency health care. For more details please consult the social insurance office in your home country. Bring the card when you seek medical care.
Non EU/EEA citizens
It is very important that students from non EU/EEA countries have a valid and complete insurance coverage since it is a prerequisite for securing a residence permit for studies.
Housing
Exchange students, double-degree and dual master's students coming to KTH are welcome to apply for housing. However, due to limited room and apartment availability, housing is not guaranteed. In general, it is easier to secure housing via KTH during the spring semester because fewer new admitted students are enrolled overall than at the beginning of the autumn semester.
We always recommend students to search for housing on their own in addition to applying with KTH Housing.
Finding housing on your own
KTH Housing rents rooms for exchange students in student housing buildings, offering dormitories and apartments. The rooms are located on KTH Campus or nearby. KTH can only provide this service for a limited number of international students, as Stockholm's housing market is challenging.
To get in touch with KTH Housing, please send an email to housing@kth.se .
Compensatory support
Students with documented, permanent physical or mental disabilities (such as dyslexia, ADHD, etc), can receive compensatory support in their studies at KTH. The support the student can get is always an individual assessment and depends on the disability. KTH's most common supports include, for example, extended writing time, computer typing during exams, and note-taking support.
The student's medical certificate should specify both the student's name and date of birth. If the medical certificate is in a language other than Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, or English, the student must present a certificate issued by a certified translator. The translation must be in English or Swedish. Another alternative is for the student to contact their local healthcare provider and ask them to issue a certificate in English before coming to Sweden.
If the student has a physical disability and might need accessibility adaptations in the physical environment, or if the student needs sign language interpretation during the studies, they must contact KTH well in advance.
The student is recommended to bring any medicine or mobility aids they may need during their stay in Sweden, as healthcare in Sweden may be more expensive.

KTH account, access card, and registration
All students at KTH are given a KTH account, which is their personal identity in the KTH central user database. The KTH account is used to access IT services and systems at KTH. The student will also receive a personal access card, which gives the student the right to access authorised and locked buildings and premises. The KTH account and access card are personally handed to the student at KTH’s central student desk, KTH Entré, upon arrival at KTH.

All KTH students must register for their courses at the beginning of each study period; otherwise, they might lose their spot in the course. Incoming students can register for their courses after having received their KTH accounts.

Orientation and welcome activities
Students can choose to arrive at KTH on any day they prefer, as long as they are present at KTH by the start of the semester. Please note, students cannot receive their KTH accounts and access cards earlier than:
- Autumn semester: First Arrival Day in August
- Spring semester: Early January
KTH encourages students to arrive on any of our Arrival Days, which we organise to provide incoming students a smooth arrival at KTH with several available services.
Arrival Days and other important dates
During the listed Arrival Days, KTH offer additional services, such as extended opening hours for picking up KTH accounts, access cards, and housing contracts, as well as luggage storage and activities with the student union, THS. During the Arrival Days in August, KTH also organise airport transfer throughout the days.
All institutions of higher education in Sweden have student unions, and KTH’s is called Tekniska högskolans studentkår (THS). All newly arrived international students are encouraged to take part in THS’s International Reception. The primary purpose of their activities, which are optional, is to help international students get to know each other, enjoy their stay, and learn about Sweden. The student union organises several social and cultural activities, including trips and parties, particularly in August and January, but also throughout the semesters.
KTH and THS work closely together. In collaboration, we also organise a fair at the beginning of each semester, where newly admitted students can meet with student associations and KTH’s support teams, to learn more about activities, involvement opportunities, and available resources.
