Courses for Macromolecular Materials

The two-year master's programme in Macromolecular Materials consists of three terms of courses and one final term dedicated to the master's degree project. Each term consist of approximately 30 ECTS credits. Depending on which track you choose, you will study different courses. The courses presented on this page apply to studies starting in autumn 2026.

Year 1

During the master studies six courses are mandatory and at least two conditionally elective courses from the students chosen subject area (Biofibre materials or Polymeric Materials) must be chosen. In addition, recommended courses amounting to 15 credits will be taken and 15 credits complementary courses can be freely chosen, or if the student so chooses more conditionally elective courses can be followed. During the last semester a master thesis project will be performed. Note that courses given during the spring semester should be taken in the first year since the master thesis project is scheduled to the spring semester in the second year.

For the subject area biofibre materials the following courses are conditionally elective during period 3-4 year 1: CK2180 and KD2170.
For the subject area polymeric materials the following courses are conditionally elective during period 3-4 year 1: CK2180 and KF2190.

There might be changes. Recommended courses may be cancelled if the number of admitted students are less than minimum of places, or will be given every second year.

ME2814 can be replaced by one of the following courses and counted as a recommended course: ME2016 Project Management, Leadership and Control, AL2160 Environmental Management, LS2444 Technical Communication in English (period 1 or 4 in year 2), or corresponding course(s) with a maximum of 7.5 credits. If the student wants to take another course instead of ME2814 or the courses listed here, the program responsible must approve it before the course starts.

The course KF2110 is mandatory for all students admitted to the program, except students admitted to program with a background at the Degree Programme in Materials Design and Engineering (CMATD). In this case the student should instead follow a course from the recommended or conditionally elective course list. The course KD1270 Organic Chemistry, Basic Concepts and Practice 2 is a prerequisite for the course CK2310 Advanced Organic Chemistry and is therefore a recommended course for the students with a background at the Degree Programme in Materials Design and Engineering (CMATD).


For students following the Degree Programme in Biotechnology (CBIOT) who want to obtain the Degree of Master of Science in Engineering 15 credits of recommended or elective courses are replaced by the following two courses;
CB2140 Enzymology and Biocatalysis, 7,5 credits BB2425 Glycobiotechnology, 7.5 credits

For the subject area biofibre materials the following courses are conditionally elective during period 1-2 year 2: KF2470, KF2495 och CK2480.

For the subject area polymeric materials the following courses are conditionally elective during period 3-4 year 1: KF2150, KF2495 och KF2505.

Study year 2 consists of courses and a mandatory degree project, second level, 30 higher education credits.

KF200X Degree Project in Fibre and Polymer Technology, Second Cycle can be replaced by the following courses and counted as a mandatory course: KD200X Degree Project in Chemistry, Second Cycle, KE200X Degree Project in Chemical engineering, Second Cycle, or corresponding degree project course at advanced level comprising 30.0 credits.
