KTH stärker sin position
Årets antagning stängde 15 april och jag kan avslöja att KTH har stärkt sin ställning rejält för förstahandssökande till civilingenjörsprogram. Efter en svagt nedåtgående trend valde nu 28,8% av dessa KTH. För andra året i rad slår KTH också rekord i antal förstahandssökande till dessa program. Samtidigt är Chalmers minskning märkbar, på över tre procentenheter.
På den negativa sidan kan jag konstatera att andelen kvinnor som söker till KTH i första hand sjunker. Den ligger nu för första gången sedan 2014 under 31% (30,7%). Den här frågan finns det anledning att fundera över på KTH och dekanus har nu gett skolornas fakultetsnämnder i uppdrag att ta fram en handlingsplan för breddad rekrytering och breddat deltagande. Den ska vara klar vid årsskiftet och ITM-skolans fakultetsnämnd kommer strax påbörja arbetet.
Två andra trender inom våra femårsprogram är att arkitektutbildningen minskar medan civilingenjörsprogrammet i industriell ekonomi ökar. Hela 22% av alla som sökte civilingenjörsprogram på KTH i första hand sökte industriell ekonomi (mot 18,8% 2024 och 16,5% 2023 och 2022).

Det finns mycket sagt och skrivet om dessa frågor. Det vi inte riktigt har kommit till är att fullt ut börja tillämpa all forskning och alla goda idéer. Så en del av handlingsplanen kommer behöva innehålla hur vi faktiskt tar arbetet från teori till praktik. Mer om detta i slutet av året.

KTH strengthens its position
This year’s admissions closed on 15 April, and I can reveal that KTH has significantly strengthened its position in terms of first-choice applicants to its Master of Science in Engineering programmes. After a slightly declining trend, 28.8% of these applicants have now chosen KTH. For the second consecutive year, KTH is also setting a new record for the number of first-choice applicants to these 5-years programmes. At the same time, Chalmers’ decrease is noticeable, at over three percentage points.
On the downside, I must note that the proportion of women applying to KTH as their first choice has declined. For the first time since 2014, it has fallen below 31%, now standing at 30.7%. This is a matter that warrants reflection at KTH, and the Dean has now tasked the faculty boards of the schools to develop action plans for broadened recruitment and wider participation. The plans are to be completed by the end of the year, and ITM’s Faculty Board are just about to start the work.
Two other trends in our five-year programmes are a decline in applications to the architecture programme and an increase in those to the Industrial Engineering and Management programme. As many as 22% of all applicants to KTH’s Master of Science in Engineering programmes chose Industrial Engineering and Management as their first choice (compared to 18.8% in 2024 and 16.5% in both 2023 and 2022).

There has been much said and written on these issues. What we haven’t quite achieved yet is fully implementing all the research and good ideas. So, part of the action plan will need to address how we actually move from theory to practice. More on this towards the end of the year.
